    Help - Searches

Basic Search

Using one of the search areas, enter values and hit the "Search" button.  You can also have values in multiple search areas to further refine your search.   Hit the "Clear All" button to clear any inputted values from all search areas.

Note:  Search results are limited, so if your search criteria yields more than maximum, please limit your query further.

Primary Property Address
For the Primary Property Address search, choose a street (or begin typing in the street field) from the pulldown list and hit the "Search" button.  You can also additionally input a house number in the House # text box or a unit value in the Unit text box to further refine your search.

If you look for a specific street name within the Street dropdown, and you do not find it, then a primary property address doesn't exist for that street or the street name may not be formatted in the way that you might think.  You can use the County's online Road Name Index to verify the format that the County uses for any given road name.  You also may use the Location Search (link to the left), which is not property address specific, to look up a a given road name.

If you enter a value in the House # text box that is not in the database, the application will identify the nearest house number for you that you can then use in the House # text box.

Note:  This search currently allows you to only search for the main property address for a given parcel.  You can either use the Property Address Information section of the Advanced Search interface or the Building Address Search portion of the Location Search interface to search on non-primary property addresses.

Owner
For the Owner search, enter a full or partial last name into the input box.  For partial searches you can enter, for example, "Thom" to yield results for all parcels who have an owner's last name that starts with "Thom", like "Thomas", "Thompson", etc.  Then hit the "Search" button.  Please note that the owner information is stored as last name first, so you could narrow your search down to Gene Thomas versus Marvin Thomas by entering "Thomas, Gene".

Parcel
In the ID text box, enter a full or partial County parcel identification number and hit the "Search" button.  For example, you can type "078A0" to return all of the parcels whose parcel IDs begin with "078A0".  A parcel ID number is the unique, 14 digit number that the County uses to refer to parcels.

The full 14 character format of a parcel id looks something like this:  05500-00-00-08300.  The "05500" represents the tax map number, the first "00" represents the section, the second "00" represents the block, and the "08300" represents the parcel number.  This particular parcel number is tax map 55, parcel 83.  Shorthand notation removes the extraneous zeros yielding something that looks like this:  55-83.  Notice how the section and block numbers were completely removed.  In a scenario where a parcel has a section and/or a block number the notation would look something like this:  56A1-1--10.  The "1" represents the section number and the double dashes, or "--" indicates that the block number is "00".  Looking at another example, 62A2--G-24, the "--" in this case means the section Number is "00" and "G" is the block number.

For the Parcel search, you must enter a complete or partial parcel id using the full 14 character format.

Subdivision
For the Subdivision search, choose a subdivision (or begin typing in the Name field) from the pulldown list and hit the "Search" button.

Recent Sales
For the Recent Sales search, put in the From and To date values using the format MM/DD/YYY where MM is the month, DD is the day, and YYYY is the year.  For example, inputting "4/23/1978" in the From field and "11/17/1978" in the To field, will yield all parcels that were sold from April 12, 1978 to November 17, 1978 (if there are any).

If you were to put "2/15/2005" in the From field and nothing in the To field, the search results would yield all of the parcels sold from 2/15/2005 to the present.

Advanced Search

Using one of the search areas, enter values and hit the "Search" button.  You can also have values in multiple search areas to further refine your search.

For example, if you put in "Smi" in the Owner field as well as a Sale Date range of "1/1/2004" to "12/31/2004" and click "Search", you should be presented with all of the parcels that were sold in 2004 whose current owners have a last name that starts with "Smi".

Hit the "Clear All" button to clear any inputted values from all search areas.   Please be aware that the more fields you populate with values, the fewer results you will receive.

For any fields that have a From and To portion, you can input values in one or the other as a way to further refine the search.  For example, you could put 490 in the From field, and nothing in the To field, for "Total Acres" to yield all parcels that are 490 acres or more.  Conversely, if you were to input 490 in the To field, and nothing in the From field, the results would be all parcels that are less than 490 acres (note: unless other fields were used, this particular search would probably exceed the search result limits - see following note).

Notes about certain fields:
Deed Book and Deed Page:  Deed Book and Deed Page values are for deeds of conveyance.

Note:  Search results are limited, so if your search criteria yields more than the maximum, please limit your query further.

New Address Search

If you have values in more than one of these fields, the application will use all inputted criteria.  Hit the "Clear All" button to clear any inputted values from all search areas.

Clicking on the column headings will sort the returned records.  After results are returned, clicking on the "Map" link will take you to the mapping interface where you will visually be able to see to which property the permit applies.

Permit
Type in the permit number (you can include the initial "B", if applicable) and click the "Search" button to find a record for that permit number that's in our addressing database.  Partial values are accepted for the beginning portion of a permit number (e.g. a value of "200508" will match all permits that start with "200508").

Year
Using the "Year" dropdown, you can click the "Search" button to find all of the permits for a given year that are in our addressing database.

Street
Use the "Street" dropdown and click "Search" to find all of the permits on a given street, regardless of year, that are in our addressing database.

Location Search

The Location Search interface will take you immediately to the mapping interface, whereas the other searches return a set of records first.  Each component of this search interface works independently of each other (i.e. the radio button next to a given area determines which component's values are used upon hitting the "Search" button).

Building Address
Choose a street from the dropdown list and input an address for the street that you would like to map.  This interface, unlike the address search on the Welcome and Basic Search interface, should allow you to search on any valid County address even if it's not the main property address for a given parcel.

Street or Intersection
Choose a street from the dropdown list.  You can now hit the "Search" button to map the entire street, or choose a street from the "Cross Street" dropdown list and hit "Search" to map the intersection.

The "Route" dropdown list can be used to map a road based on its route number.

Points of Interest
From the "Type" dropdown, you can choose a certain category for points of interest that you would like to map.   The "Name" dropdown list will then populate with values based on the chosen type.  Hitting the "Search" button will map the chosen point of interest.

Coordinates
This search interface allows a user to map a point in Albemarle County using either a Geographic (Latitude/Longitude) coordinate system or the Virginia State Plane (Easting or X value, Northing or Y value) coordinate system.  Both of these systems use the NAD83 datum.

Search Results Page

The search results are sorted by Parcel ID by default.  Click on another column heading to sort by that column. For example, clicking on either House #, Unit, or Street will sort the results (ascending) by street, then house number, and then unit (if applicable). Clicking on Owner will sort the results (ascending) by owner name.

If the number of records is more than what can be displayed on a single screen, there will be links at the top where you can display more records.

Mailing Labels
The "Mailing Labels" link will allow you to export the search results to a PDF file formatted as mailing labels.

Export List
The "Export List" link will allow you to export the search results to a tab-delimited text file.  Note:  the OtherPropStreet field in the text field may be truncated if the data for this field will be longer than 255 characters.

Map All
The "Map All" link will map all of the properties returned.

Map and Property Information Links
Clicking on the "Map" link for a particular parcel will zoom the mapping interface to that particular parcel.  The parcel will be highlighted.

Clicking on the "Property Info" link for a particular parcel will take the user to the Property Information page.  This page will yield more detailed information about the given parcel.

Property Information Page

The Property Information has a pull down option which allows the user to view detailed information about the chosen parcel including building sketches and property photos (if available).  Links on the right-hand side of the page provide the user more options with respect to the selected parcel, including the ability to map the parcel.
